Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. DuVernay worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt the time she needed throughout the day for the love of art, literature, and theater. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay's mother also had the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to communicate by means of the medium of art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has lived for many generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma to later direct the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. As a student DuVernay was interested in creating for the broadcast media. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home of a particular Jury member. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work she was given and deciding to go after a career in publicity. DuVernay was immediately hired out of college as an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. In addition to PR, the company established several lifestyle platforms like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
